Collagen Injection and Usage

There are a myriad of lotions and creams available on the market that provide excellent maintenance for a person’s face. At some point, however, these products cease to be effective, to the point that the ravages of aging counteract whatever benefit one may have derived from their usage. As a person gets older, the collagen in one’s skin breaks down, contributing to the gradual formation of lines and wrinkles. When this integral component of a person’s skin begins to deteriorate, the most intuitive solution is to introduce more collagen to replace the deficiency.

Collagen has been used for many applications since its discovery. It has been found to be effective in treating stress urinary incontinence. Damaged vocal chords have also benefited from collagen treatment. It has also helped with joint mobility. Through direct injections, collagen has likewise helped a huge number of patients cosmetically. Collagen-based fillers have been used since the 70’s and have helped people get rid of unwanted wrinkles, lines, crow’s feet beside the eyes, and folds. It has also been used effectively in plumping up the lips, improving scars, filling hollow cheeks, and minimizing deep crevices.

A natural protein found in bone, cartilage, tendons, and skin, collagen is not only present in human bodies; it is the most copious protein in mammals as well. Most of the collagen fillers used in the market are bovine-based because they are cheaper, but these break down after only a few weeks to a few months. Since they are proteins, they do not remain inert after deterioration, but are naturally absorbed by the body. These fillers, however, are prone to causing allergic effects. Porcine collagen from pigs has also been used, but the effects are more painful. As such, synthetic collagen fillers have now been developed that provide satisfactory results. One such product uses collagen mimetic peptides combined with natural collagen. This marriage of chemicals produces longer lasting results. Human-based collagen, with brand names such as Autologen, Isolagen and Dermalogen, also remains intact longer in a person’s body. It is also known to trigger significantly less allergic reactions and is a great substitute for bovine-based collagen. The only drawback is that these are more expensive.

A good physician should administer your collagen shots. The person should be experienced in collagen injection usage and have the proper medical board certification. Practically anyone is a good candidate for collagen usage, the only contraindication being those who are allergic to the substance. A collagen patch will be placed on your skin to determine if you are a valid candidate or not. As mentioned, most allergic cases result from bovine-based injections. The chances of an allergic reaction lessen with synthetic and human based collagen.

The process of getting collagen injections is fairly quick and straightforward. It is determined beforehand what parts of the patient’s face require the most enhancement, and it is in these areas that the collagen is injected. The treatments usually last between 30 to 60 minutes. It is an out patient procedure and one can go home immediately after it is finished. Effects of collagen injections can last up to six months if derived from bovine skin. Other types may last up to a year or more.

Again, being made of natural protein, there is very minimal risk of side-effects from collagen. If allergic effects are experienced, however, most people see these disappear within a few months. Very rarely, patients may experience red bumps that end up causing permanent scars. It is reported that auto-immune disease may also be caused by collagen injections, but this has not been proven. Most people today still enjoy the beautifying effect of these injections without any significant adverse reactions.
