Cheek Implants

No matter how gifted, wealthy or powerful a person is, he or she is only human, and there is always the chance that he or she will suffer from some physical insecurity or dissatisfaction. Society has placed stringent demands on its ideals of beauty, which is quite prominently reflected in the face. One of the focal points of the facial area is the cheeks, where high, well-defined cheekbones are considered attractive, and the lack thereof tends to ruin an otherwise magnificent profile.

There is a reason cheek implants are one of the most popular plastic surgeries, and it is because people almost immediately notice cheek imperfections, such as sagging. Some consider the cheeks as one of the most striking features of the face and would like them to be at their most ideal and beautiful state. This can definitely be achieved through the wonders of cheek implantation.

For the discerning patient, there are around 60 specific shapes of cheek implants from which to choose. There are however, only a couple of basic types. Malar implants are the most common, being placed directly onto the cheekbone. If you want to augment the middle of your face however, submalar implants, placed beneath the cheekbones, are more suitable. The two types may be combined for a more wholistic augmentation, if it is necessary. There are also three general materials used for the implants. The most common substance used is silicone, but surgeons that want better integration use either Medpor or Gore-Tex. Medpor however, might cause problems if one has to undergo revisions, as the highly inert material tends to bond with the underlying tissue a little too well.

Antibiotics will be prescribed before the procedure to anticipate against infection, which is an inherent risk in all surgeries that require incision. General anesthesia will be used to make the experience more comfortable. There are four kinds of techniques that can be used in placing the implants. Implants can be placed through an incision inside the cheek and over the gums. An incision may also be done on the lower eyelid and the implant can be inserted through there. There is one particularly impressive procedure where the incision is made in the scalp. Lastly, if one is also undergoing a face lift, the implant will be placed under the skin flap. Sutures or screws may be needed to fix the implants in place. The procedure takes one hour and recovery can be expected in ten days. Side-effects may include bleeding, scarring, implant migration, and asymmetry problems all of which can be adjusted easily by your surgeon.

Revisions will not be needed, however, if one goes to an excellent surgeon. Cheek implants require a very high aesthetic skill and excellent judgment. The difference in millimeters between two implants is very significant and a skilled doctor can tell. He will give you an extensive consultation and determine your exact needs. Men and women have different needs and vastly different looks. Most men want a chiseled, rugged look and opt for short and narrow implants. Women on the other hand, want softer, more feminine features, and look more beautiful with rounder cheeks.

Not all individuals may be suitable for the cheek implant procedure. People with psychological problems and autoimmune disorders are not recommended for cheek implant surgery. Eye disease, sinus problems, and dental problems are also red flags for the surgeon. Smokers will be advised to quit due to the bacteria in the mouth and its close proximity to the incisions. If dental crowns and root canals need to be done, they should be accomplished before the surgery to avoid complications.
